"Unique" is surely one of the most overused words in our lexicon, and in most cases it is thoroughly undeserved. However, in the case of Tom Waits we reckon it is. Not that you can have degrees of "uniqueness" but can you think of anyone (other than maybe Frank Zappa) so deserving of the word? And on the brilliant Mule Variations, Tom Waits produced an album of such originality that while it may have divided uninitiated listeners, the one thing everyone could agree on was that it was unique.
