Dancing In The Dark was the first time an 11-year-old me had seen or heard Bruce Springsteen. My dad had a copy of Born To Run on cassette, but I’d never played it. Then I saw the video to Dancing In The Dark, and it was like an epiphany. He was all the dreams and rare jewels that mid 80s America promised and yet were lightyears away from suburban Kent. Bruce was MTV, Levi 501s, and beautiful girls with great teeth and sparkling eyes. He was a Cadillac Eldorado to Austin Montego. Van Halen had sparked my fascination with the period, but whereas Dave Lee Roth looked like a superhero from an alien planet that would have your (imaginary) girlfriend away in a heartbeat, Bruce Springsteen looked real, he looked honest and in the decades since he’s never once let me down.
