300 years old and even if the narrative tongue has moved on somewhat, it is amazing how fresh Gulliver’s Travels remains. The satire is as biting and the parody every bit as well observed as anything that has been written since. Taping into the zeitgeist for adventure that Daniel Defoe had captured so perfectly just a few years earlier, Jonathan Swift carried on Robinson Crusoe’s theme of man’s thirst for adventure and escapism better than any modern author has come close to. Brilliant on every level, it is no wonder that Gulliver’s Travel has never been out of print since it was first published. There was never any doubt that Jonathan Swift’s masterpiece would inspire a Gulliver’s Travel T-shirt.
