Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining is like the Abbey Road of films. Yep, it seems laughable today, but like The Beatles classic, The Shining was greeted with a resounding "meh" by the critics. Naturally pretty much everyone involved denies it now and has rightly reappraised it as a seminal work from a crazed genius. Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Jack Torrance has been rightly heralded for its power, but these days has arguably been sold short into parody by "Here's Johnny", so please, give it another watch and enjoy a role that it so much more than an axe through a door and a scary face.
