Someone way more insightful than me said that the only difference between freedom fighter and terrorist is who is which side you are on. So when we all booed as the Empire zapped Alderaan into oblivion, we nailed our colours to the mast. The Empire may have seen us as Rebel scum, but we knew the truth. We were freedom fighters battling oppression.
